Spent Grain Dog Treats with Pumpkin

These spent grain dog treats with pumpkin were a hit with our dogs.

This is my second spent grain dog treat recipe. My first one used peanut butter. For the fall season, I made this batch of spent grain dog treats with canned pumpkin. I’m not sure which recipe the dogs prefer – they gobble everything. Pumpkin is supposedly pretty good for dogs so perhaps this one is healthier.

Out of spent grain? I’ve heard you can ask your local breweries what they do with their spent grain. You may find one willing to share! There are also companies selling spent grain flour. I just read about one called Rise.

You can also try my sourdough starter dog treat recipe!!! I’ve heard that dog adoption and sourdough baking have been two popular pandemic activities. Hopefully homebrewing and dog treat baking are also taking off!

Stay tuned for more spent grain dog treat recipes – my husband is planning on brewing a Christmas ale in a few weeks!

My test subjects, Nala and Lincoln, took the treats eagerly.

Notes on Spent Grain Dog Treats

This recipe is extremely easy. It uses only 4 ingredients: spent grain, flour, pumpkin, and egg. I stir everything together and knead it with my hands. Then I roll it out on a well floured surface.

You can shape your spent grain dog treats by hand but I prefer to use cookie cutters. I have a set of three different sized bones I found on Amazon for $7 bucks. I also like to use my Fox Run Squirrel Cookie Cutter, 3-Inch, Stainless Steel""“>squirrel cookie cutter. If you don’t want to use cookie cutters, you can simply use a knife to cut rectangles or squares.

I let our puppy test the spent grain dog treat dough mixture. He approved with great enthusiasm.

Description

This is a riff on my first spent grain dog treat recipe. I swapped pumpkin in for peanut butter and changed the ratios a bit. With only 4 ingredients, it is pretty easy!!!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups spent grain
  • 3 cups flour*
  • 1 cup pumpkin
  • 1 egg, beaten

Instructions

  • Pre-heat over to 350 F
  • Combine ingredients in large mixing bowl. Mix with a spatula or knead with your hands.
  • Use a rolling pin to roll out dough on a well floured surface. Use a cookie cutter to cut out treats. Alternatively, you can shape treats by hand.
  • Bake treats on cookie sheet for 25 minutes.
  • Remove treats from oven and lower heat to 200 degrees.
  • When oven has cooled, return treats and cook on 200 for about 2 hours to dry them out

Notes

*If dough is too wet, add a bit more flour.

Keywords: spent grain, dog treat, pumpkin, dog biscuit
