This sweet girl turns 9 years old this month. We are making her spent grain dog treats to celebrate.

My darling dog is about to turn 9 years old. Oh, how the time flies.  In honor of her birthday, I decided to try my hand at making homemade dog treats. My husband, who loves to brew beer, kindly offered to brew a new batch so I could use the spent grain. I hadn’t realized this was an option but apparently spent grain dog treats are quite popular these days. We found a very simple recipe online that involved peanut butter. Pups loves peanut butter so we figured they would be a hit. As far as we can tell,  she likes them just fine. If you are a dog owner who also brews beer, try these spent grain dog treats!

Description

This is my first attempt at dog treats so I decided to follow a recipe. I selected this recipe from Eckraus because it was extremely simple and it contains peanut butter so I know pups would approve.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups spent grains
  • 1 cup flour
  • ½ cup peanut butter
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  • Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees
  • Combine all ingredients in large mixing bowl. Mix to combine.
  • Use a rolling pin to roll out dough on a floured surface. Use a cookie cutter to cut out treats. Alternatively, you can shape treats by hand.
  • Bake treats on cookie sheet for 30 minutes.
  • Remove treats from oven and lower heat to 200 degrees.
  • When oven has cooled, return treats and cook on 200 for about 2 hours to dry them out.

Notes

You should make the treats on the same day or shortly after you brew. If waiting a day or two make sure to refrigerate them.

The site where I found this recipe noted that hops are toxic to dogs. If making dog treats with your leftover grains, please be sure that they haven’t had any contact with hops.
