Sourdough Dog Treats

Use extra sourdough starter to make treats for your pup!

I started baking sourdough bread about two months ago. It’s now become part of my weekend routine. I like to prepare the dough Friday night and bake my bread Saturday morning. A problem I’ve encountered is figuring out what to do with all the extra starter. This week I decided to try making dog treats with it. The recipes I found online seemed too complicated so I invented my own recipe that mirrors the bread recipe I’ve been using. Ultimately I just swapped 1 cup of flour out for 2 cups of oats and added peanut butter (pups loves peanut butter). I mixed my dough together on Friday evening and baked it in the morning (same as I do for the bread).

Ingredients

Scale
  • ¼ cup active sourdough starter
  • 1 ½ cup warm water
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 cups steel cut oats
  • ⅓ cup peanut butter

Instructions

  • Combine the sourdough starter and water. Mix to combine. Stir in the flour and salt. Cover and let dough rest (1 hour or overnight).
  • Pre-heat over to 400 degrees.
  • Stir the oats and peanut butter into the flour mixture. The dough should be thick and easy to handle. If it’s still wet and sticky add a bit more flour.
  • Use a rolling pin to roll out dough on a floured surface. Use a cookie cutter to cut out treats. Alternatively, you can shape treats by hand.
  • Bake treats on large cookie sheets for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 200 degrees. Bake treats 1 hour longer.

Notes

I’ve been mixing the sourdough starter with flour, water and salt the night before I make my dog treats (I mix these ingredients together at the same time I make my sourdough bread dough). I don’t think the 12 hour rest period is necessary but I’ve never skipped it.
