Frozen strawberry margaritas are a great choice for a backyard happy hour.

I always love the idea of frozen fruity cocktails but in actuality, I typically can’t stomach them. We just returned from a tropical all inclusive resort vacation where you could order an endless supply of fancy frozen drinks. They all looked amazing but after a sip or two I’d be overwhelmed by the sugar. I ended up sticking with campari spritzes and the occasional mojito. I resolved to experiment with making my own frozen cocktails when I got home. These frozen strawberry margaritas are my first attempt. The smoky mezcal pairs wonderfully with the strawberries and fresh mint adds an extra flavor zing. Make these for your friends on Cinco de Mayo day and you won’t get any complaints! Serve them with fresh Pico de Gallo and avocado tomatillo salsa to complete your Mexican happy hour.

Notes on Frozen Strawberry Margaritas

This recipe is pretty simple – frozen strawberries, lime juice, tequila, and triple sec. I also threw in a handful of mint leaves which I recommend. You can add a bit of simple syrup too for more sweetness but I think the strawberries and the triple sec provide plenty.

I chose to use two types a tequila – mezcal and a silver tequila. I love the smoky mezcal flavor but sometimes it’s a bit overpowering. Mixing it with silver tequila is good way to get a nice balance. If you don’t have mezcal just use all silver tequila (or gold, reposado, etc.). You can swap Cointreau or Grand Marnier for the triple sec if you wan’t a top shelf margarita.

Adding mint and mezcal to your frozen margaritas elevate them to craft cocktail status!
